Prof. Dr. phil. Ari Widodo, M.Ed. and Dr. Eliyawati, M.Pd., lecturers in the Science Education Study Program at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), took part in the 9th Conference of the Japan ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) Society and the Asian Teacher Educators for Climate Change Education (ATECCE) Network 2026 Meeting. The events ran from 28 August to 1 September 2026 at the Faculty of Education, Okayama University. They were supported by the Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO and Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and brought together teacher educators from more than 12 Asian countries.

This meeting was part of Phase 2 of the ATECCE Network, which is developing a Climate Change Education (CCE) framework for school education. Phase 2 was launched in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in May 2024. Participants visited community learning centres in Okayama and joined the forum “Planetary Health and the Future of Education.” They also took part in poster presentations of country reports, regional focus group discussions, and an exchange session with classroom teachers. Together, these activities served to finalise a regional CCE framework for schools.

The activity directly supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Under SDG 4, it strengthens climate change education in teacher education and school curricula, in line with Target 4.7, which calls for education for sustainable development. Under SDG 17, the meeting brought together universities, UNESCO-affiliated institutions, government ministries, and teachers across borders, building partnerships to share knowledge and good practices. This participation strengthens UPI’s international network with Okayama University and the ATECCE Network and opens opportunities for joint research. The insights from Okayama are expected to enrich ESD-oriented science and STEM teaching and teacher education at UPI. UPI will also contribute to implementing climate change education in Indonesia.
